Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW),  informally known as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld.

This system of welding is great for outdoor and thick metal applications. It is also the least expensive. If you are looking to get into welding on a budget, this is the way to go.

Great for gates and fences, large or outdoor sculptural work. Or, for just getting some practice in controlling the puddle.
